Collaboration is a school wide learning outcome that is a challenge to assess. The aim of our research was to demonstrate how Agency and Collaboration go hand and hand with each other while improving overall accuracy of assessment by the learner and facilitator.
The learners completed two exercises. First, each learner used a rubric and self assessed where they thought they currently stood as an individual with their Agency. The term Agency encompasses the ideas of personal responsibility, setting high personal standards, and taking ownership of one’s own learning, career path, successes, and setbacks.
The second reflective exercise can be fun to watch. Learners take more responsibility for their actions. After the project is over, as a group they have to decide what percentage of work each learner did.They all have to agree and two people can not have the same number. This will in turn translate into better group collaboration. Some groups are quick to decide. Other groups have to hash it out for a lot longer.

Take Aways
I am fortunate to have a great mixture of all grade levels. I was impressed that it is clear how much rookies will improve with self assessment by the time they are juniors and seniors.
I feel that these exercises made everyone more aware of their roles in a group setting. If they were a laid back person, they had to step it up and ask what they could do for the group. If they were an overbearing leader type, they had to learn how to step BACK and delegate.
